The master suite typically includes an ensuite bathroom, as well as generous closet and dressing space to make getting ready a breeze. If you're lucky enough to have a palatial master suite in your home, it's worth making the most of all that space with individual functional zones and a cohesive style that evokes hotel suite vibes. Here, we show you how it's done. 

Decide on a theme

With so many different elements to work with, it's important to understand the overarching impression you want the room to inspire before you start piling in bedroom furniture. Envision how you want the room to make you feel and find a theme that suits that, whether it be a black and white colour scheme, a Hamptons-style bedroom, a relaxed resort retreat or a luxury hotel suite. Incorporate items that help create a daily routine

Depending on where your closet space is placed in relation to the ensuite, you can create a sort of production-line flow that lets you access everything you need at the right stage of getting ready for the day. 

Dressing table

Set up a dressing table, or make your own with a console table or desk and a statement mirror, at the beginning of your journey from bed to ensuite. Style it with a jewellery box, so you can take off earrings or cufflinks before going to wash off the day in the evening, a tray for trinkets and perfume for that last-minute spritz, and a vignette of vases or a stack of books. Make sure to include a comfy accent chair and plush cushion for casual lounging too.

Closet

Next in line is the wardrobe space. If you don't have built-ins, make your own open clothing arrangement with a chest of drawers, clothing rack and sheer curtain to show off your favourite pieces and make picking out the perfect outfit easy. Ensuite

Being a semi-separated room, your ensuite styling can flow through from the bedroom or be completely different altogether. Keep it simple to instil calm as you prep in the morning or wind down in the evening. Store items like cotton swabs and makeup brushes in matching jars or canisters to create order and only house frequently used items on countertops. Scatter in a couple of candles for when you need a long relaxing bath to give some ambience.

Make lighting a decoration

Take the opportunity to think beyond bedside lamps and add low-hanging pendant lights to each side of the bed. Not only will you have ample reading light, but they frame the space and become a decorative feature in their own right.

Add seating

The addition of seating in a master suite creates a sense of conversation between furniture pieces and solidifies it as a zone of rest. If you've got room for it, create your own private reading nook or relaxation space with a plush armchair (or two) and a side table for your morning coffee or evening vino. 

Include plants

No area designed for rest and rejuvenation is complete without a touch of greenery. Whether your plants are real or faux, they'll add a touch of life and freshness to the space that'll have you feeling weightless.
