How to create a Hamptons bedroom

The uptake of this popular interiors style shows no sign of slowing down in Australia and it's no surprise really. Its fresh and relaxed coastal aesthetic works in sync with our laidback culture and our love for the outdoors. Here, we show you how to create a Hamptons bedroom for a haven for rest and relaxation.

Make the bed the focus

Given the bed is likely to be the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom, use it to maximum effect with an oversized bed frame and bedhead. Avoid modern metal frames and opt for upholstered bases with statement bedheads featuring elegant details such as diamond button tufting, metal studs or winged sides. If you have the space, make the bed even more of a feature by adding an ottoman bench or dressing bench at the end of your bed; it'll also come in handy as a place to store all those accent cushions come bedtime.

Include plush bed layers

As a continuation of making the bed the star, lay on lots of layers with quilts, bedspreads, throws and cushions. Opt for breathable natural fabrics such as cotton and linen to create that comfortable feeling that's associated with the Hamptons style. For a traditional Hamptons look, stick within the classic colour palette of whites, neutrals and blues, but for a more modern take, consider browns, greys, beiges and blacks. Avoid intricate patterns and let the layers take centrestage.

Add even more textiles

Just when you think you might have your softs covered with the bed, don't forget to consider the floor and windows too. Add soft flowing curtains in light colours and continue the softness down to the ground with a large natural fibre rug such as jute, sisal or wool.

Have a layered lighting scheme

You definitely don't want harsh overhead lighting when creating a Hamptons bedroom. Instead, introduce different lighting layers with ambient, accent and task lighting. For a more glamorous Hamptons bedroom, hang a statement chandelier or bold pendant light for general ambient lighting. Highlight interesting decorative features such as your signature Hamptons nautical and beach artwork with strategically placed wall lighting, and make tasks such as reading in bed easier with a pair of matching wall sconces or table lamps. As with the textiles, it's safe to stick to natural materials such as rattan pendant lights or wooden chandeliers, but gold and brass accents add a touch of luxury and sophistication.
