Medium Christmas Trees

Not sure your living room can handle a full-size Christmas tree? A medium tree, generally 1.6 to 2 metres, is built for exactly that gap between a small tree that looks lost and a large one your ceiling can't take. Find your fit.

Medium Christmas tree heights for standard living rooms

A medium Christmas tree, suits most standard living rooms with typical 2.4 metre ceilings without needing the extra floor space a large tree demands. It's the size most households land on by default, since it reads as a proper family tree without dominating a smaller or mid-sized room. Check your ceiling clearance before buying at this height too, since a topper can add a further 20 to 30cm on top of the tree's stated measurement. A medium tree also strikes a practical middle ground for decorating, needing enough baubles to look properly dressed without the higher counts a large tree requires.

Lighting options available on medium Christmas trees

Choose a pre-lit medium tree if you'd rather skip stringing lights through the branches yourself, since the light count is already scaled to suit this height without over or under-lighting it. Go unlit instead if you already own a suitable light string or want more control over colour and brightness. A medium tree generally needs somewhere between 500 and 700 lights for full coverage if you're lighting it yourself, depending on how dense you want the finished look. Fibre optic versions are also available at this height for a built-in colour effect without any separate lights to add.

Choosing medium over small or large Christmas trees

Choose medium over small if your living room comfortably fits a full-size tree and you want it to read as the room's centrepiece rather than a compact accent piece. Go large instead if you have higher ceilings or an open-plan space where a medium tree would look undersized against the room. Medium is generally the safer choice if you haven't measured your space first, since it fits comfortably in most standard rooms without the risk of overwhelming a smaller space. If you're still unsure between the two, measuring your ceiling height and available floor space first is the more reliable way to decide.
