The best dining table for a small dining room

If you’re setting up a dining ‘room’ within an open-plan living area, first establish the dining zone and determine how much space you actually have to work with. Once you have these measurements, you can then start thinking about the dining table which will set the tone for the entire space. When choosing a dining table, consider the size and shape of your room, as well as the number of people that you’ll be accommodating.

If you like to entertain, think about how often you do it realistically; there’s no point squeezing in a dining table for 6 in a small apartment if you’re a couple who only entertain twice a year. To keep your options open, consider an extendable dining table

While rectangular dining tables are the most common choice and work well in long or narrow rooms, small round dining tables are great for smaller spaces and square dining areas. Not only do round dining tables fit more people, they’re also more conducive to conversation and sharing food, and its curved shape creates flow in a space.

The best seating for a small dining room

When it comes to choosing seating for a small dining table, opt for a minimalist design such as a simple solid back chair or a cafe-style cross back chair in a light colour or pale timber to appear less bulky. Check out our blog post on how to choose dining chairs for more tips.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match dining chair styles, either. To avoid visual clutter, stick to the same colour or similarly toned wood, but play with shape. Just ensure that the seat height is the same for all the chairs you choose. For more tips on how to nail this look, check out our blog post on how to mix and match dining chairs

Dining benches can also be a great way to mix up seating for rectangular dining tables. Not only does this backless seating style declutter the space, making it ideal for small dining rooms, it also allows you to squeeze more people around the table, which is ideal when you have extras drop by for dinner.

If you really want to be economical with space, then consider stools or folding chairs which can be stacked or folded and stored away when not in use.

How to organise a small dining room

Storage is key in a small dining room, so consider adding wall shelving, cabinets or a sideboard to store your dinner sets, glasses, servingware and table linen. If you’re really tight on space, consider a narrow console table with shelving, which can also act as a room divider for open-plan living-dining spaces.

Small dining room ideas & styling tips

A great way to zone a dining room is with a rug. Not only do rugs create warmth and comfort, but they also add colour and texture to the space. Check out our blog post on how to choose a rug for your dining space for tips on rug materials, colours and styles.

When choosing a dining table, glass dining tables are great for adding brightness to smaller spaces and appear less bulky than timber dining tables

Of course, don’t forget the power of mirrors to create the illusion of more space. A large-scale mirror in a small dining room or compact living-dining area will reflect more light and will also make your space appear more luxurious especially if you opt for a striking shape or frame.

Don’t have space for a sideboard or buffet? Simply add a bar cart for the corner of your dining area for extra storage. Check out our blog post on how to entertain in smaller spaces for more practical tips.
