Budget living room ideas for autumn
Make the social centre of your home extra cosy and inviting as the months get cooler with these simple and affordable styling solutions.

Swap out your cushions
Just as you'd swap out your summer wardrobe for your winter one, do the same for the cushions on your sofa. If you have a neutral sofa and can afford to play with colour, go for some of the latest colour trends like magenta, orange, pinky red, golden yellow and chocolate brown to inject vibrancy into your living room as it gets darker. This year, it’s also about mixing and matching, colour-blocking and bold florals. To ensure everything still looks cohesive, choose cushions that sit within the same colour family, then mix fabrics, patterns and details like fringes, tassels, embroidery or scalloped edges. Heavier fabrics like knitted cotton, wool and velvet are also extra cosy for autumn and winter. Need some tips on cushion arrangement? Slip a cover on your sofa
Transform the colour of your sofa or disguise a stubborn stain with a sofa cover. Removable stretch couch covers are fantastically economical and convenient to update your living room. The type of fabric you choose will depend on your budget, with cotton and linen at the pricier end, and polyester at the other. Check out our article on slipcovered furniture for more tips on materials and colours.
Create decor clusters
Whether it’s a shelfie of hanging plants, or a coffee table vignette of books, vases of flowers and sculptural objects, updating decor is a super easy and affordable way to update your living room. This autumn, we’re continuing to see curvy decor with ribbed glass vases, bulbous ceramics and mirrors with scalloped edges. Curate your collections, then artfully style them on your surfaces. Add statement lamps
With days getting shorter and nights getting longer, lamps are a great way to add brightness and warmth. Before adding one to your cart, consider what it will be used for; shaded lamps provide a warm ambient glow, while domed lamps generate directional light for tasks like reading. For even more impact to your space, consider a tall statement floor lamp. This year, we’re seeing simpler forms and more natural materials like rattan, rope and terracotta. If you’re watching your budget, simply swap out the lamp shade. Check out our Lamp Buying Guide for useful tips on how to choose lamp shades.
Rearrange your furniture
Here's a style tip that doesn't cost you a cent: reconsider the layout of your living room. Many of us tend to push all our furniture against the wall which can make a space feel dull and sterile. Moving furniture deeper into a room and setting up zones for conversation will immediately make your living room feel more inviting. Don't forget to also leave enough space for people to move between furniture. Also, consider the focal point of the room and, if it is the TV, consider using your entertainment unit to display other interesting objects to give your space more personality.
Display large art
You don't need an original artwork to make your living room look a million dollars. Our Temple & Webster Art Collection includes a beautiful mix of landscape, abstract and botanical art with a hand-painted look on stretched canvas that's ready to hang. We’re loving the artworks with earthy autumnal colours as large wall art options for the living room. Ensure that you hang your wall art at eye level (the centre of the artwork should be roughly 160cm from the floor) so that it can be fully appreciated and have maximum impact.
