Celebrating our Mums for Mother’s Day

Some of us at T&W share our earliest memories of our mums, plus snaps of them from the family photo album.

Rachel, Mum of Tim, Head of Logistics

Earliest memory of Mum
Going to our holiday place at St Georges Basin, NSW. I was lucky enough to have a mum who let me get a boat licence, own a boat, and take it out into the bay on my own as soon as I became a teenager.
Mum's catchphrase
"You should try it yourself". As a father now, I reflect that Mum was teaching an important life lesson: independence. I'm grateful for her raising me that way.
3 things that were always in Mum's handbag
A billion keys on a keychain, a sunglasses case and Panadol (to help her handle me and my three siblings).
How Mum made home feel?
Safe. She also taught me how important family is, and that if you want good things in life, you have to work hard for it.

Hedwig, Mum of Rafaela, Head of Customer Care

Earliest memory of Mum
Grossly, it was her and Papa kissing in the kitchen :)
Mum's catchphrase
When it was raining and I wanted to be picked up from school in the car instead of having to walk, my Mama would say, "Du bist jo ned aus zucker," which translates as "you are not made from sugar!".
3 things that were always in Mum's handbag
Tissues, lipstick and keys.
How Mum made home feel?
Despite moving out of home at age 14 and then moving to Australia as an adult, our family house in Austria, and especially the garden, still feels like 'home'. I absolutely love a full house when my parents, three sisters and their partners are all home. It's a home that's full of discussion, laughter and passion. My husband, who doesn't speak German well, always thinks we're fighting, but we're just putting arguments forward to support our case!

Annabelle, Mum of Sarah, International Furniture Buyer

Earliest memory of Mum
Eating a huge Easter egg in the back of a caravan.
Mum's catchphrase
"I don't mean to interfere but…"
3 things that were always in Mum's handbag
Lipstick, barley sugar and her purse.
How Mum made home feel?
Warm and welcoming… just like home ought to be.

Jenny, Mum of Bridgette, Editorial Assistant

Earliest memory of Mum
Mum watching on as my sister tried out her new roller skates on Christmas morning in freezing England, while I rode my trike up and down the driveway behind her.
Mum's catchphrase
Whenever my sister comes home for dinner, the first thing my mum says is "Did you bring your jammies?". The other one is "Don't be mean to ya mother/brother/sister!", always said with a little laugh and smile.
3 things that were always in Mum's handbag
A comb, a little coin pouch with my brother's face on it and hand cream she probably hasn't used in years.
How Mum made home feel?
My mum is a big believer in having a central family home for everyone to come back to and for everyone to be welcome in. She made home feel like the most comfortable place in the world, probably too comfortable seeing as I still haven't moved out… though every time I mention it she says, "No, don't leave me!" and how could I do that to her?

Kathy, Mum of George, Operations Manager

Earliest memory of Mum
Her picking me up from day care and going for hot chips afterwards.
Mum's catchphrase
It's a Greek one which she used to say every time we left the house: "Ta matia sou dekatessera", which is her telling us to have fourteen eyes while we're out, i.e. watch out and be careful. Ironically, since having kids of our own, Mum now has more of a social life than we do, so we're the ones saying it back to her.
3 things that were always in Mum's handbag
Lollies, tissues and coins.
How Mum made home feel?
Warm, cosy and full of food. Nearly four decades on, and nothing has changed.

Marilyn, Mum of Drey, Creative Contributor

Earliest memory of Mum
Mum bathing me because I had gotten so dirty playing with the other children on the street. After that, I got a stern talking to about looking after my clothes.
Mum's catchphrase
Mum would yell, "food's on the table" five times a day. She is a fabulous cook of Filipino cuisine. I've loved food since I was young and I believe Mum was a big part of that.
3 things that were always in Mum's handbag
Her phone to take pictures of everything; money because her three children were always asking for things; and Panadol from the headaches she'd get from us.
How Mum made home feel?
Mum made home feel whole and when she wasn't there, it was like an important piece of the puzzle was missing. I never knew how much she had actually done for me until she went abroad. She had a way of always making things look like part of a carefully laid-out plan, which now I know was so much work.

Wishing all Mums out there a very Happy Mother's Day!
