The Joedie Lawler Collection

My Name is Joedie Lawler, I am a Saunders from Taree. I am a Biripi Artist and traditional weaver from Biripi. My traditional country is located on the East coast of Australia. My grandfather described our country as where the leaves touch the water from the mountains to the see. My tribe are the shark people and my skin is Watu the possum.

My work is contemporary reflecting my view of the world. the country and places through my eyes. The connections we have with each other and the importance of our environment, what I refer to as our home. The place where your feels full.

I have painted since I was only young sitting beside my grandmother watching and learning. I have held various exhibitions with success. I love to express my views and thoughts through my art and find it takes me away to a space of peace. Where my only thought are the colours and the placement of my next dot. I have delivered various Commercial commissions with glass, fabric, landscape design, weaving and murals. It is a great feeling to work past a building and see your work in its construction.

I learnt how to weave in my late 30s from an Aboriginal Aunty from Goodooga , Aunty Judy O’niel. Later meeting her teacher Aunty Bev Coe from Condobolin at the corroboree festival a few years later. I have since passed on this skill bringing women children together weaving new connections and healing our people through weaving projects.

I hope that you connect with my work and find the same peace in it as I do.
