The Prop Shoppers

In the Winter edition of The Prop Shoppers, T&W stylists Jessica Bellef and Adam Powell source cosy layers, organic ceramics and colourful accents...

Jess: How stunning is this Tretchikoff 'Miss Wong' cushion? I came across it on Vintage & Retro a few weeks back, and it immediately sprang to mind when I was handed sheet sets to style. The colours were perfect and the retro feel would take the sheeting to a cool 1950's place. I added this amazing lamp also from Vintage & Retro to continue the concept. The handstitched fibreglass shade with a touch of turquoise worked back with the vibrant pink of the sheeting, completing my mid-century inspired bedroom.

Adam: I was recently at a third year graduate show of the Styling students at The Whitehouse Institute of Design when I spotted this 1940's pearl shell in one of the displays. In true Adam style when i see something I instantly fall in love with I have to have it. Knowing some of the students there I asked Jessie McNaught how it came about being there. Funnily enough it was her mum's that had been passed down by her mum. They both very kindly gave it to me as a special gift and it is one of my favourite items I own. I have been waiting for the right time to bring it into a shot and the recent Gracious Home towel event was perfect. Mixing in the soft pastels from the towels with the natural drift wood created for a soft coastal holiday vibe.

Jess: I love ceramics with character. Organic shapes and beautiful imperfection. The Sydney design group The Fortynine Studio are masters at this art/craft. I needed something to contrast the glossy red Reiss cookware we were shooting and the studio's Flip Flop Slip range called out to me. The groups' work (and fantasic studio space) was recently featured on The Design Files  and their online store is now open for business. Big things ahead for these guys!

Adam: I am pretty obsessed with colourful crochet at the moment especially as the weather has been so warm. I love its versatility, whether thrown on the end of a bed/ sofa to add a splash of colour or to bring some energy into the dining room. The colour and texture it creates is so unique. I used this vintage yellow throw, hand dyed by Tamara at I Like Birds to complete the colour story in the recent 'How To' style bedding video.

Jess: When our bedding buyer Nikki showed me the upcoming Esprit range, there was no question in my mind that this shot was going to be about colour and fun. Enter this hand painted potplant holder by Province, with just the right amount of pink and blue. Province know how to use a paintbrush- in April this year they held a pot painting class at Koskela and past projects have included large scale public murals. My pink air vase from Japan was added to the scene, and a gifted cup and saucer from Indonesia echoed the exotic pattern in the quilt cover.
