Stylist Challenge: Style the perfect home office

Whether you work from home or need a space for something you love, such as painting or writing, your home office is a place which should inspire creativity and productivity. However, this is often not the case. In fact, home offices can be the most messy, neglected areas of the home - driving us to work anywhere else possible, such as the kitchen bench, sofa or bed (guilty!). To help you create your perfect home office, we've asked our three stylists Jessica Bellef, Allira Bell and Drew Lewis - to style the Renne 2 Drawer Desk and share their top tips and tricks!

Jess; Greenhouse Remix

Who owns this office? A novelist who works out of their London townhouse conservatory, where all the interior styling rules are cast aside and tending to a mass of indoor plants is a welcome source of procrastination.

What's in the scene and why? The all-white room is brought to life with plants of all shapes and sizes (some faux, some real), the addition of timber tones, leather (some faux, some real) and dots of art, books and decor. There is no defining interior style and the space looks all the more textural and rich because of it. The Renee desk features clean Scandi lines, while the Willow beaded chandelier hints at global style, the detail of the white Santa Maria console coordinates with the ornate wall moulding, and the natural cowhide rug, with it's stippled pattern and organic shape, breaks up the white surfaces and anchors the desk. It's a layered, eclectic space but it feels harmonious due to the tightly defined colour palette of natural timber, terracotta, white, green and the punctuating hits of black.

Top tip for styling a home office space: Lighting is key. Working in a dimly lit area can lead to eye strain and headaches, which is beneficial to no one and turns the easiest tasks into a hassle. Hunt down the natural light in your home and set up your work-station or desk nook by a window or glass panelled doors. If the only space available to you is lacking in natural light, make sure you add lamps or bright overhead lighting to properly illuminate your work. Don't forget that lights don't just have to be about function - choose an amazing statement pendant or an interesting table lamp for a decor element that can also help your productivity levels!

Every home office should have: A comfortable office chair, especially if the working days are long. It's easy to get romanced by the idea of a stylish dining chair buddied up with a desk, however, dining chairs aren't always the most ergonomic option for work stations.

A great office chair will offer lumbar support, adjustability of height settings and it will be finished in a durable fabric that breathes. Don't think you have to settle on a generic black chair though - our range includes sleek minimal designs and finishes like tan leathers and coloured upholstery, making easy work of finding a chair to suit your home office style.

Allira; Retro Rebellion

Who owns this office? A textile designer who covets vibrant colour and pattern to stimulate the imagination. Not defined by just one design era, this creative professional gains productive momentum by unexpected pairings and decorative clashes (even in heels).

What's in the scene and why? This maximalist look is all about mixing pastels and primaries, patterns and materials. Inspired by retro sensibilities, the raucous interplay of graphic textiles and sleek furniture creates a surprisingly harmonious space. Featuring clean curves, the Renee desk easily melds into this retro aesthetic, accompanied by the sleek Marseille contemporary home office chair for extra punch. Artwork by Amira Rahim adorns the wall, working with the statement Estelle 7 light pendant to seamlessly pull the colour palette together. Pattern clashes are softened by the watercolour design of the yellow Matisse Jacquard cotton rug, while the Nala marble console table adds understated sophistication to the room. Mismatched but balanced, this home office exudes energy and celebrates eclecticism by combining abstract and graphic pattern – even if it means delightfully breaking the rules.

Top tip for styling a home office space: Zone your space by being picky about desk placement. It can be tempting to squash a desk into an unwanted living room corner, but it might not be the best plan for productivity. Short on space? Zoning an area with a rug or concertina is an easy way to demarcate a home office. For those lucky enough to be able to dedicate an entire room to the cause, placing the desk away from the wall heightens the status of the desk and is an easy way to emphasise the purpose of the space.

Every home office should have: Inspiring artwork. Art enriches our lives, so where would it be more important than the room where we would like to be the most creative? Home offices can easily fall into the trap of being sterile and joyless work environments, designed for function rather than beauty. Say goodbye to bland bare walls and hello to beautiful and curated surroundings to boost morale and keep you motivated! We are spoiled for choice with artwork, so choose something that engages your passions and your home office will be a place you'll love spending time in, rather than have to!

Drew; The Anti-Office

Who owns this office? This office is owned by a globe trotting industrial designer who works at many hours as the cities they visit. While they live to work and work to live, the urban home for this design disciple is seen as a holistic space that must be slave to not just function, but form. Hence, the anti-office. Where every choice in their apartment is highly considered, such too is crafting an office that blends seamlessly into the aesthetic of rest of their space, and enables more than just one use.

What's in the scene and why? A sky high nook in a sub-penthouse transforms from a sun drenched window with views for days, to a luxe niche office where the world can be blocked out. Sleek charcoal wall panels showcase bright abstract art choices along side the bold and retro tan Taylor Italian leather sofa. Mid-grey linen floor to ceiling curtains cocoon the scandi modernist Renee desk that effortlessly matches the white leather Eames office chair - a playful pairing that shows both form and function. The statement geometric Ambrose pendant gives all the light needed for a fully functioning work space, as well as spotlighting the architectural decor. Each piece of furniture contrasts against the dark background to create a vibrant space that's not only easy but  fun to live in.

Top tip for styling a home office space: One word, four syllables: multipurpose. City pads aren't getting any bigger and every shard of space is precious. Cleverly considered desk choice and placement allows you to transform from a cosy coffee and reading nook to a practical and beautiful office space. The Renee desk easily transforms from working desk to a sleek console. Keep office elements hidden away in the drawers and style the desk with pieces that you love to look at!

Every home office should have: The perfect desk. Alongside it's best bud the office chair, the desk is the big fish in the pond, so choose wisely and make your desk work for you and your space. Once you have your placement worked out consider desk size, shape and style. If you have a home with a dedicated office space, consider a corner desk with storage, but if an apartment with limited space is what you have to work with, look for smaller desks and offset by using height and walls for shelving and storage solutions.
