International travel may still be off the cards, but that hasn't stopped us from daydreaming about holidays to come. Here, we share three global destinations we're looking forward to visiting next year: Kyoto (en route to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, of course); Mykonos (just because); and Mexico's dazzling Riviera Maya (a dazzling 120km stretch of pristine Caribbean coastline). We then created some interior looks inspired by luxury retreats in these destinations to live out our travel fantasies. 

Ace Hotel, Kyoto

Jointly designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma (who also designed the National Stadium for the Tokyo Olympics) and Los Angeles-based, longtime Ace interiors partner Commune Design, the Ace Hotel Kyoto, which opened earlier this year, is a perfect blend of East and West. The project saw the conversion of the former Kyoto Central Telephone Office into a 213-room hotel including generous landscaped garden courtyards and three restaurants. Guests can take their pick from Western-style doubles and kings with retro turntables, or tatami suites with tatami mats and Japanese soaking tubs. Dotted throughout are beautiful wooden furniture by Kyoto craftsmen, as well as vibrant art and sculpture by 98-year-old Japanese artist Samiro Yunoki. It's a testament to the "city's abundance of nature, art, ever-evolving culture, sophistication of craft and profound history". And we definitely approve.

Soho Roc House, Mykonos

Nestled between picturesque Paradise and Paranga Beach is the recently opened Soho Roc House, the latest property in the exclusive members-based stable. Blending into the Cycladic landscape with its white-washed stone buildings, the retreat is centered around a pool and restaurant with sweeping views of the Aegean Sea. The 45 rooms are simply, yet elegantly decorated with linen fabrics, jute rugs and woven tapestries in neutral colours, with touches of Moroccan influence. Those wanting a quiet escape can recline on the ample lounges and daybeds around the villas, while guests looking for entertainment need not travel far with Scorpios, a beach club which joined the Soho family last year, only a stone's throw away.

​Rosewood Mayakoba, Riviera Maya

While this property may not be as new as the ones above, it is definitely up there as one of the world's finest. Situated just north of Playa del Carmen away from bustling Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the Rosewood Mayakoba is one of four luxury resorts within the 620-acre Mayakoba complex, a gated community dubbed the "Venice of Mexico" for its network of canals that link natural lagoons, mangrove forests and pristine white-sand beaches. Expect all the bells and whistles in terms of facilities, including an award-winning spa, six restaurants showcasing local cuisine, and an 18-hole Greg Norman-designed golf course. The 129 suites are contemporary in design with lots of exposed wood, tile and stone. There are subtle Mayan motifs and the colours, textures and patterns work with the modern architecture, but also allude to this region's coastal aesthetic. That private plunge pool is calling.
