You might have noticed that we're crazy for cushions today, with four features showcasing loads of different colours, textures, prints and plains for every space, including outdoors. Verity Magdalino addresses a tricky styling issue - how to successfully mix patterns.
It's one of the more challenging interior trends right now, but with summer on its way mixing prints is a great way to add colour and fun to your home. One of the best ways to experiment with the look, while avoiding any costly faux pas, is to start with a few bold cushions. Our stylist, Adam Powell who styled today's One Duck Two cushions on location at Tamara Turnbull's homewares store I Like Birds in Paddington, Sydney, gives us his top tips.
1. Play around with proportion and scale. Pick out a smaller design, a medium print and a large pattern to avoid the look feeling too cluttered.
2. Colour is key. Our host for today's shoot, Tamara agrees, "You can really add personality and bring your home to life by adding colour and print." And the best way to start, says Adam, is to choose a colour from a design you like and use it as the link between other patterns. Or you can work with contrasting or complementary colours - the hues that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel - such as different tones of blue and orange.
3. Break up pattern with large chunks of solid colour. If you're styling a room this ensures the eye has a place to rest.
For those of you who that aren't into bold brights, Adam suggests mismatching your prints in a more neutral palette. "Some of the best print mixing I've seen is with a more subtle, tonal colour scheme," he says. From natural beiges and creams to monochromatic black and white the mantra to remember when styling with pattern says Adam, is 'less is more'.
We've dipped into Pinterest to show you a few more examples of how mixing up your prints can not only be fun but cool and modern as well.
