One of the most important spaces in the home, the entryway is used for a variety of reasons. It's the first image people see when you welcome them into your home, the last place you pass through before you leave and where you let go of the day's stresses when you return. The layout and functionality of your home can greatly alter the way you interact with your entryway, so we show you how to make the most of it.

For the small space

Living in an apartment or small home might mean that your front door opens straight into the main living space or is just a small stretch of wall, but this doesn't mean you shouldn't give it the styling it deserves. Utilise elements that will give the illusion of more space, such as a slimline console table, a floating shelf or a storage bench along with a mirror to keep it light and bright. If you place a thin floor runner or small rug at the entrance it will give the appearance of the space opening up around it. Finally, opt for wall-mounted hooks instead of a coat stand to free up some space.

For the family home

When there are lots of people in the house, the entryway becomes a thoroughfare and dumping point for commonly used things. Incorporate furniture that allows for ample storage to get school bags and jackets out of the way, such as a hall tree, adding baskets tucked underneath for stray shoes. Use a decorative bowl or tray to organise commonly used items, like keys and sunglasses. Don't forget to add touches of character for when guests pop by, like an indoor plant, a beautiful lamp or a gallery wall of wall art and/or family photos.

For a grand entrance

If you're a fan of reality TV, you'll know that shows following celebrities, such as Keeping Up with the Kardashians, or high-end housing, such as Grand Designs, always feature a show-stopping foyer. Make a statement with a big table, styled with an interesting statue, vase or floral arrangement to create a focal point. Consider a chandelier or pendant light and a rug to ground it all, plus an oversized full length mirror to bounce natural light around never goes astray. If you have the room, you can even add seating options, like a bench or armchair, against the surrounding walls so you can easily pop your shoes on before you head out the door.
