How to organise your kitchen & pantry

There's nothing like an organised kitchen and pantry. We take you through some easy steps to keeping everything looking neat and tidy. Give some love to the heart of your home: the kitchen, including, if you're lucky enough to have one, the pantry.

Create vertical storage

Don't have enough room in your existing kitchen cabinets for all your mugs and teacups? Simply install some wall hooks or racks to hang up frequently used cups near the kettle or coffee machine; it's also a great way to add personality to your kitchen, plus it shaves off time to making a cuppa. Peg boards are also trending on Instagram as a practical organisational tool to create instant open shelving.

Add storage within cupboards & drawers

Find different ways to maximise the visibility of contents in deep cupboards or cabinets by using boxes and baskets to keep similar items together; using a lazy susan for condiment bottles or spice jars; or by installing storage racks for the inside of your doors. Open crates can also be better than baskets so you can easily see all contents. Create order within your drawers by using dividers to separate kitchen utensils or, if you're lucky enough to have a spare drawer, consider making a themed drawer such as a tea or coffee drawer, spice drawer or baking drawer.

Maximise kitchen bench space

If you don't have much kitchen counter space, consider investing in a kitchen island or butcher block to create extra work space. Many of these also come with drawers and shelves, so you'll also have extra storage for any bulky cookware, chopping boards, excess plates and bowls, and small cooking appliances.

Use smart and compact kitchen accessories

To ensure your kitchen looks free of clutter and to maximise every inch of space, invest in kitchen accessories with sleek shapes and clever design. Think slim pedal bins, less bulky knife blocks and folding dish racks.

Decanter food into clear containers

It may take up extra time, but transferring pantry staples into clear food storage containers not only looks neater, but also helps you keep your food fresher for longer, prevent pests, and enables you to keep track of stock levels. Don't forget to label everything, also including expiration dates and any cooking instructions. It's also worth extending this clear food storage principle to the fridge, using clear plastic fridge organisers for cans, bottles and food packets.
