How to make your home extra cozy

As the cooler weather sets in, it's time to make bundling up with a good book or Netflix binge session extra snuggly. A few years ago, everyone was learning how to hygge (that's pronounced 'hoo-gah' by the way). If you didn't get the memo, that trend, based on the Danish way of living, was about creating a cosy, comfortable atmosphere through a simple, pared-back approach. While balancing comfort and style is still definitely the name of the game, it doesn't necessarily have to be about neutral colours or minimalism. Here, we share other tips for making your home irresistibly cosy and inviting.

Create more seating
Consider upsizing your sofa with an extra-deep modular sofa to sink into. A velvet sofa or boucle armchair will also add plush texture to enhance the cosy aspect of your room. Don't have the space for large pieces? Add an ottoman or create relaxed floor seating with floor cushions and pouffes. Equally, when creating more seats, think about providing enough side tables for everyone's drinks, snacks and personal items. Round ottomans not only soften your space but when you add a tray to them, they easily double up as a coffee table or extra side table.

Drape a throw or two
For the ultimate snuggly experience, drape a throw or blanket across the back of your sofa or over the arm of a chair. Go for something soft and tactile - think faux fur, velvet, mohair or chunky knit. Fringed throws also add lovely detail and texture. You don't have to stick to a neutral colour either; try a seasonal colour such as rust, ochre or mulberry.

Go for the messy bed look
Cosy is all about a casual lived-in look and that also applies to the bedroom. Learn how to master the messy bed look with crumpled linen and you may never want to get out of bed again.

Warm up floors with high pile rugs
Jute, sisal and flatweave rugs are great for warmer temperatures, but as it gets cooler, you want to go for a high pile rug. Wool rugs are also excellent in providing insulation from the cold and they're soft and durable too. Warm up your home with an extra-large area rug or, for a more affordable option, overlap two smaller rugs. Create strategic soft landings in areas such as the sides of your bed, in front of an armchair as part of a reading nook, or underneath your coffee table.

Add flickering flames
There's nothing quite as relaxing as sitting by a fire watching the flickering light. It is, after all, part of our evolution. If you don't have a fireplace or it's not cold enough to warrant a fire, light a few candles instead. Group candles in clusters to create intimate vignettes for the ultimate mood setter. Candlesticks and candle holders also add a romantic touch.

Decorate with books
When you talk to book-lovers about decluttering, many will draw a line at their books. Not only do books have sentimental value, but they also innately bring warmth to a room, adding personality and reminding us of the people who inhabit the space. While coffee table books bring elegance and weight with their hefty size and decorative spines, don't be afraid to decorate with smaller books too. Stagger heights and arrange books vertically and horizontally for interesting displays.
