How to decorate your entrance for Christmas

Christmas music is starting to trickle into shopping centres which means it's time to get your own home ready for the festive season, and where better to start than with your front entrance. Whether you live in an apartment or a house, a decorated entryway is sure to get visitors and your own family in the Christmas spirit. Be sure to consider how you balance your door decor and use the surrounding surfaces. Play with symmetry and get creative; a little DIY goes a long way! Find our step-by-step guide here.

1. Match the style of your home

Use your already curated style as a starting point for your decor. If your home has a rustic cottage or country house feel, complement this with wooden crates, metal watering or decorative milk cans and branches. If it has more of a coastal or Hamptons-inspired aesthetic, consider Adirondack chairs or a wooden bench dressed up with outdoor cushions.

2. Refresh your front door

Use the holiday season to give your front door some much-needed TLC with a lick of paint; it'll make any decorations that you add shine just that bit brighter. Browse our paint collection to find your perfect shade.

3. Consider the style of wreath

A staple of any Christmas front door is the wreath, and its beauty lies in its adaptability. If you have a plain wreath, try dressing it up with some shatterproof ornaments to make it pop. Don't like traditional hoop wreaths? Try a swag wreath instead, or learn how to customise a plain wreath with native Australian flowers like the image above.

4. Work out how to display the wreath

When it comes to hanging the wreath, think outside the box. Play with its position or stack multiple wreaths on top of each other. Have a glass panel on your door or don't want to nail a hook into it? Use a ribbon running over the top of the door as your hanging device.

5. Add lights
Don't want to go all out with Christmas lights? Drape leafy garlands weaved with fairy lights around doorways and handrails instead.

6. Add extra decor
Amp it up by displaying mini Christmas trees by your door, or dress up already existing potted trees with tinsel and ornaments. You don't have to have a green thumb either, with artificial plants having the double benefit of looking realistic and being very low maintenance. You can also fill lanterns with colourful baubles and dot these around your entrance for an extra festive touch.

7. Share festive messages
Display a personalised season's greeting for your neighbours with a blackboard. Get creative and add some flair; the more personal and localised, the better!

8. Use rugs to add colour
If your entryway or porch is covered, consider replacing your regular doormat, or laying it over the top of a Christmas-inspired outdoor rug or runner for a finishing touch.

"Take your Christmas wreath to the next level in two easy steps. Firstly, suspend the wreath from the top of your front door with a bright oversized satin ribbon topped off with a large bow. Secondly, for some embellishment, attach gold and silver baubles with twine from the bottom of the wreath, grouping them at different heights so they cascade down."
