Fun family night ideas

As we embark on another round of school holidays amid COVID-19, with some of us going into a second lockdown, here are some ways to keep up family spirits and ensure everyone is entertained.

Game night
Nothing brings the family together like silliness coupled with healthy competition. While board games such as Scrabble, Monopoly and Pictionary are always winners, why not try something different for a change. Take Guess Who to a new level with Guess the Musician or Guess the Politician or, for the little ones, opt for these Minute to Win It games to get everyone on their feet. These paper and pencil family game night ideas are also clever and economical ways to entertain both young and old.

To keep everyone sustained for game night, put on a spread of comforting finger food to share. Try hearty beef, chorizo and black bean nachos (above), tandoori lamb meatballs with minted yoghurt, or take popcorn chicken to the next level with this recipe for baked peanut and pretzel chicken (below) with a bloody Mary dipping sauce for the adults.

Movie night
Movie night is always a no-brainer for easy family entertainment, but it doesn't have to just involve zoning out on the sofa. Make it more interesting with themed costumes, snacks and decorations. Here are some themed family movie night ideas to get you started.

Create an extra cosy cinema in your living room with party lights and a blanket fort, or set up the play tent and pull out the sleeping bags. If your kids are too old for that, get out the bean bags and floor cushions instead.

Don't just stock up on dollar mix lollies and crisps. Make an afternoon of creating your own sweet treats and savoury snacks. Invent new popcorn flavours, or take your pick from these 50 flavoured popcorn ideas, from crunchy ramen to margarita popcorn infused with tequila for the big kids. Whip up a sinfully decadent peanut butter nutella candy bar brownie (pictured above) or chunky chocolate, peanut butter and caramel slice, and take a trip down memory lane with a retro creaming soda spider (pictured below).

Backyard winter picnic
Light up the fire pits and crank up the outdoor heaters and put on a winter picnic spread. Customisable food options such as pizza and tacos that each family member can assemble to their taste, are always popular. Alternatively, designate a course to each member of the family or create a family platter of sausage rolls, mini gozleme and these tempting cheeseburger pies (below). Arrange them all on large sturdy serving boards with plenty of dip bowls for condiments so everyone can help themselves.

Pull-aparts such as these mini brioche sliders and cheesy spinach loaf (pictured below) are also easy to share and tackle without cutlery. Score the bread loaf with a good-quality bread knife to achieve perfect diamonds, and be generous with the mozzarella to up the ooze factor.
