8 ways to stay sane in the run-up to Christmas

eight_ways_to_stay_sane_in_the_run_up_to_christmas

Summer has officially started and the countdown to Christmas has really begun (not that you need reminding). It's easy to feel overwhelmed with the stream of events and deadlines, not to mention, that ever-growing to-do list. Here's how to take charge.

  1. Work parties, school parties, end-of-year concerts, family gatherings, catch-ups with friends … it's impossible to say yes to everything. Prioritise on the important stuff and say no to the rest. Similarly, you don't need to buy presents for everyone. Perhaps just buy for the kids or limit the number of presents. Also, prioritise Christmas traditions. If making a gingerbread house is a non-negotiable, then maybe consider scrapping the homemade jam this year.

  2. Amid all the chaos, make sure you take time out for yourself. Go for a walk, enjoy a dip in the ocean, watch a movie (ideally not Christmas related unless it's Love Actually) or whatever rocks your boat.

  3. Wear noise-cancelling headphones when you're out and about. It's sensory overload right now with Christmas jingles on rotation and tinsel and baubles everywhere you turn, so if you have to brave the crowds, mute the madness or calm your nerves with a serene soundscape.

  4. Better still, avoid the shops altogether and shop online. In the peace and quiet of your own home, it's easier to stay focused on what you actually need and not get distracted by yet another gift for yourself (though you probably also deserve it).

  5. Manage expectations. This is one of the busiest times of the year so it's going to be messy and chaotic. It's okay for things to not be as perfect as you hoped.

  6. And speaking of perfection, remember that life isn't as styled and glossy as Instagram. Cut back on social media to maintain a sense of perspective.

  7. And if you've really lost your way on what Christmas is all about, regain perspective by doing some volunteer work.

  8. And don't forget, you can always download and print off our ultimate checklists to get organised for Christmas to help you out.
