Wood Floating Shelves & Wall Shelving

Bracket types and stud-anchoring for a secure floating shelf install

Are your current shelves already sagging in the middle after just a few months of books and frames? When you’re installing a floating shelf securely, anchor into wall studs, or use hollow-wall anchors rated for the load stated on the bracket packaging. Skipping this step is what causes a shelf to pull away from the wall later, rather than any fault in the shelf itself.

Space wooden brackets no more than 60cm apart to prevent bowing under the weight of books or decorative objects. If you fix a shelf into studs with concealed rod brackets, it can hold 20 to 50kg depending on how many studs are used, compared to just 5 to 15kg for a plasterboard-only fixing. Concealed rod brackets sit hidden inside the shelf for the cleanest look. L-bracket and lip-bracket styles are more visible but cheaper and easier for a first DIY attempt. If a shelf’s already sagging, start here.

Choosing shelf depth and vertical spacing for what you’ll actually store

A depth of 20 to 25cm suits most display and book storage. A 30cm depth is more practical for larger items like A4 folders, vinyl records or photo frames. Kitchen shelves tend to run 25 to 35cm deep to fit plates and jars comfortably. Vertical spacing matters just as much as depth. Allow a minimum of 25 to 30cm between shelves for standard paperback and hardcover heights, stepping up to 35 to 40cm for a decorative display mixing objects of varying heights.

Pine and rubberwood are the most common timbers in affordable ranges, thanks to their consistent grain. Oak and acacia in mid-range and premium options resist denting better under everyday use. Getting the spacing wrong in either direction, too tight for what you actually own or too loose for a considered look, is usually more noticeable than the timber choice itself.

Styling wood wall shelving in living areas and kitchens

In living areas, layering books with small plants and a single decorative object per shelf keeps the display personal and interesting. Stick to one considered item per shelf rather than several competing for attention. In kitchens, open wooden shelving works best limited to items you actually use daily such as spice jars, a few mugs, a small oil bottle so that the shelves stay functional.

Most Australian rental properties allow shelf installation with landlord permission, provided holes are patched and repainted on vacating, but be sure to check first. Use a stud finder with the correct anchor hardware to keep the eventual repair minor. That last point is worth checking before drilling, as it’s the difference between a simple bond-clean patch and a more involved repair.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?

A floating shelf fixed into wall studs with concealed rod brackets can typically hold between 20kg and 50kg depending on the number of studs used and the bracket specification. Shelves mounted into plasterboard with hollow-wall anchors are generally limited to 5 to 15kg per shelf.

What is the standard depth for a floating wall shelf?

A depth of 20 to 25cm suits most display and book storage purposes, while a 30cm depth is more practical if you want to store larger items like A4 folders, vinyl records or photo frames. Kitchen floating shelves are often 25 to 35cm deep to accommodate plates and jars.

How far apart should floating shelves be spaced vertically?

For books, allow a minimum of 25 to 30cm between shelves to fit standard paperback and hardcover heights. For decorative displays mixing objects of varying heights, a 35 to 40cm gap gives you more flexibility without the shelves feeling sparse.

What timber types are most common in wood wall shelving?

Pine and rubberwood are the most common in affordable floating shelf ranges due to their consistent grain and workability. Oak and acacia appear in mid-range and premium options, offering a harder, denser surface that resists denting from everyday use.

Can floating shelves be installed in a rental property?

In most Australian rental properties, you can install shelves with landlord permission, provided you patch and repaint any holes on vacating. Using a stud finder and the correct anchor hardware minimises the hole size, making the repair simpler at the end of your lease.
