Do you have a decorating dilemma that's causing some interiors anguish? The answer may lie in a new online interior design business - STYLECT - which offers a quick and easy online solution to your question from a stylist or decorator in your state. You can ask a question about anything from paint colours to furniture choices, or plan a whole room makeover, and receive an email answer within 3 days. STYLECT has kindly offered 15 T&W members the chance to have their question answered - and even better, they'll suggest T&W products whenever possible. Ask your question below for your chance to win!
Co-founder Bridget Cull saw a gap in the market and launched STYLECT "to transform the options Australians have when it comes to professional style, decorating and furniture advice for their homes." She matches customers from all around Australia with an interior stylist or decorator in their area, and the whole process happens online.
STYLECT can cover mini and full room revamps, but the 'Ask a question' option is super simple. You ask your question online, and upload images of the room or detail you're asking about, and 3 days later you receive an email with your answer, including 3 different options for furniture or accessories and two options for paint colour or materials questions.
Jo Carmichael is one of STYLECT's stylists - we asked her more about how the process works.
Jo, your background is in magazine styling. What are the different considerations when creating decorating solutions for real life?
Magazine styling is about trend and being very creative, it’s fun and you can be frivolous and borrow what you need. Decorating in real life includes a little bit of that approach, but also thinking about designing a space to be practical, affordable and achievable.
What type of questions are you seeing most frequently so far – paint colour schemes, furniture choices or decorating decisions?
We are seeing quite a mix. We thought most of the questions would be about furniture/accessories but we are also getting lots of decorating questions. Some of the questions we've had include: “What tiles should we use for our kitchen/dining room?”, “Can you help me decorate the walls in my toddler’s room?”, “What cushions would suit my bedroom?”, “What shelving/bookcase would suit my dining room?”
What do you think are the most common decorating pitfalls faced by home decorators?
A lot of home owners I meet have all these great ideas but actually don’t know where to get things from, or how to tackle a project. They have a sense that you have to spend big bucks to get an amazing interior but clever use of simple materials in the right way can be just as effective if not more.
What has been your greatest challenge and success so far?
Our main challenge is being available 24/7, but we are in an online world now and that’s what people, including us, now expect! I have been asked a few tricky questions so far, including one about building an outdoor seat to be functional but also attractive to hide the view of next door. I suggested a seat made out of Hebel bricks, clad in stone stack tiling, and with a mesh and green creeper on the wall behind it. It was easy for the clients to install themselves, as they had no budget. I love coming up with solutions that work functionally and aesthetically.
