For softness underfoot as you climb in or out of bed, lay a sheepskin on the floor over your rug. Having done this in my own bedroom, I can attest to the cosy feeling and the way the organic shape of the sheepskin softens the room's mood. It's perfect for a space dedicated to R&R.

To play on a monochromatic geometric theme in the lounge room, a hide layered over a simple stripe rug can pack a punch.  Stick to black, white and neutral in your flooring choices to add depth and bring your mono-geo look onto the floor.

If the rug you love is too small for your space, all is not lost- you can make your rug appear bigger by centring it on a larger rug. In the kitchen above, a neutral sisal mat frames the bright flat weave rug, highlighting the colourful pattern and allowing the dining table to sit within the larger rug's borders.

Get the effect of a large-scale patchwork rug by placing tonally similar flatweave dhurries next to each other. Here, the muted patterns add warmth and texture to the room while still allowing the strong lines of the midcentury furniture to sing. Use anti-slip underlays to avoid skidding and sliding all over the floor.
