Karen McCartney explores the appeal of our newest Object of Desire - NOMI's Chevron Shelf - designed by award-winning Australian designer Henry Wilson.
Designed exclusively for NOMI, the Chevron Shelf is one of those rare moments when utility meets desirability. Created by one of Australia’s award-winning young product designers, Henry Wilson, the Chevron Shelf marries economy and sustainable principles with a clear design signature.
This stacking modular shelf is ingeniously constructed from 4 pieces of precision milled birch-ply to create a single unit of shelves. On the practical front, the shelves come flat packed and are easily and intuitively assembled without the use of any tools.

“I’ve always thought that an object’s beauty stems from the way it is resolved. I try to resolve a sense of truth in each piece and hopefully create a bond with the user in the process,” says Wilson.
Drawing on the chevron as an ancient interlocking symbol, he acknowledges that its honest shape has had a longstanding resonance with his philosophy.
The open nature of the shelving system means that quality books and magazines are easy to see in a living room context but equally the shelves work well in a home study, a kid’s bedroom or a kitchen. Their simple form means they are easy to add to – both vertically and horizontally – and decoratively their honest construction ensures they work in any interior context.

“And,” Wilson adds, “if you are moving house you don’t have to empty them – all you do is carry them like a box. For me design is all about honestly resolving problems.”
NOMI is an Australian brand working with a number of designers to bring innovative, customisable designs to the market. Director and co-founder Henry Gresson says, "Our mission is to combine innovative design with efficient manufacturing and cutting edge online technology. Henry's Chevron Shelf epitomises this mission.”
