Karen McCartney talked to Peter Morrissey, renowned designer and the man behind the stylish & luxurious Morrissey towels & bedlinen range.
Your tag line ' Fashion people's lives' is really cute for someone with a strong background in fashion. What inspired you to move into the homewares space?
I really like being part of people's lives, not just their wardrobes. As a designer, I'm constantly designing across every part of my own life so it felt like an easy, natural progression.
There are so many choices out there – what sets your designs apart from the rest?
My designs for Morrissey are all about offering a luxurious feel. Every piece has personality, and of course they're fashionable, but I don't want to impose too much. I want the person using Morrissey to be able to express their own personality using my designs.

The palette feels controlled, sophisticated and unisex. Did you set out to create something in that space?
I'm always drawn to a classic colour palette because I think it always works.
It took me a moment to register the 'M' motif on the Mr M towels - and it really works well - is this something we will be seeing more of?
Yes, definitely. I've had the M design for many years waiting for the right moment to use it. It's my signature – like the Hermes 'H' or the Gucci 'G'.

Morrissey bamboo & cotton sheets in charcoal.
Bamboo is a key component of the bedding range – and known for its great performance qualities. Was the fabric mix a key decision for the range?
Yes, absolutely. I love the combination of bamboo and cotton because it's luxurious to touch without being fragile. I love the combination of softness and strength, both in my products and in the people I love.
What is the most important quality bedding must have?
It must make you want to sleep in it – your bed is such a personal space so you want to feel comfortable and restful. If people want to dive straight into a bed made up with Morrissey bedlinen, then I feel like I've succeeded.

Mr M's favourite thing at home, a shell vase that belonged to his mother.
Quick fire questions
Design hero alive or dead: Halston, Karl Lagerfeld, Stuart Membery
Favourite homewares item: At my home, my mother's shell vase and the Mr M towels.
The colour combination that never fails you: Black and white with chocolate and camel. I think it's smart and comforting.
Styling tip for towels: I love large towels, and if I use a print I match it back with a plain white towel.
The most beautiful bed I have ever slept in was in ……….. a bed full of love and cuddles.
