After looking at hundreds of entries from readers around the country, it’s time to count down Home Beautiful magazine’s most Beautiful Rooms for 2016. Temple & Webster was once again the official partner, with our Head of Styling Jessica Bellef joining editor Wendy Moore on the judging panel. The winner took out $10,000 in cash, the people’s choice $1000, and the 14 finalists each won a $500 Temple & Webster voucher. Here we take a sneak peek at the winning room plus a few of our favourite finalists, and break down how you can get the looks at home. BATHING BEAUTY
This year’s winner of the $10,000 first prize was Amanda, for the bathroom she created at her home south of Sydney. Amanda showed not only an eye for detail and materials (that perfectly bookended marble!), but plenty of original thinking too – including the custom vanity inspired by a Mid-Century sideboard, and the use of nature inside and out that obviously bears her stamp as a florist. “I love how the clean lines of the sideboard vanity work with the ornate mirror and marble detail of the wall – it’s a perfect balance” says Jess.
Style file:
• Inset a basin into a new or vintage piece of storage furniture to create an original vanity with character.
• Choose on-trend matte black tapware.
• Bring green indoors.
COASTAL COMFORT
We love the way finalist Belinda has packed a whole lot of living into a relatively small open-plan space on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. “This is a really comfortable room that says a lot about the homeowners and the seaside lifestyle they live,” says Jess.
Her relaxed coastal style carries through from the living area, with its welcoming slipcovered sofas piled with linen cushions, to the woven light fittings and a kitchen that’s tied in by the colour scheme.
Style file:
• Unify an open-plan space with a defined colour palette – here it’s neutrals and greys with a hint of blue.
• Warm up a white sofa with tactile linen cushions and textured throws.
• Bring in timber and woven pieces for a coastal feel

PRETTY IN PINK
Finalist Paulette created a pink bedroom for her three-year-old daughter Madeleine that gets the balance just right between sweetness and style. “The thoughtful decoration details, like the cluster of mirrors on the wall and the sheepskin on the floor, would make a little princess feel right at home” says Jess.
Style file:
• Bring in pink elements a little girl will love using curtains and bedding, for a look that’s easy to switch up as she grows older.
• Wall decals make a fun, easy-to-apply alternative to wallpaper.
• Use a teepee, floor cushions or a beanbag to define a play area in a child’s bedroom

INNER SANCTUM
Finalist Tiarn’s bedroom was simple yet striking. Again we love the fact that this room succeeds not because of expensive finishes but thanks to a few simple yet clever styling choices. “The way the two artworks are resting on the bedhead has created the effect of a picture rail, which is a great idea especially for renters who can’t affix art to the wall” say Jess.
Style file:
• Layer cushion shapes and textures on the bed – break up square and rectangle shapes with a round cushion and fringed throw.
• The dark wall almost becomes part of the bedhead, and makes the graphic artwork really pop.
• A hint of mint in the throw and foliage keeps the look fresh.
