Karen McCartney makes a surprising discovery about our newest Object of Desire, the Kubus candleholder from By Lassen.
I have a confession to make. Until I started my research I thought the Kubus candleholder was a contemporary design. There, I said it. Its simple geometry, the open square form and measured cylinders in perfect proportion spoke to me of modernity, of now. But on reflection is that not what an iconic design should be – it should be timeless, always of the present. So while I previously liked it, now I know it was designed in 1962 by Mogens Lassen in Copenhagen, I LOVE it. Call me shallow but I do appreciate a good design pedigree.

Mogens Lassen (1901-1987) was an architect and pioneer of Danish Functionalism, who took inspiration from Bauhaus principles. For him geometry was king and this showed in his architecture and in the furniture and objects he designed to go in his houses.

The Kubus 4 (for the four candles - there are also single versions and a rather magnificent eight candle model) is a prime example of this preoccupation. His finely calibrated sense of proportion and the relationship between the elements ensure it works in perfect balance. Lassen spent a long time working on it, and even when considered finished, it was not a production piece but was reserved as gifts for friends and other architects.
By Lassen's video illustrates the care taken in the production of each piece.
Now more widely available, it is still made by skilled artisans and represents Danish craftsmanship, with each piece stamped for authenticity.

Available in copper-plated steel or in steel that has been lacquered black or white, Kubus 4 is a piece of iconic design that brings with it a quiet modernist touch - and the grey candles are a plus in the style stakes.
