New Melbourne finds by Share Design's Shareen Joel

Shareen Joel is an interior architect at her own firm, Shareen Joel Design (SJD) and also the founder of Share Design, an online design resource & blog. You might have spotted her Sorrento beach house in this month's Real Living magazine. If not, read on for a glimpse at her summer escape and a slice of her busy life.

My Sorrento beach house
In 2011 we built our family beach house in Sorrento, Victoria, designed by my design business Shareen Joel Design. Located directly across the road from the Sorrento Sailing Club, the house was built around my husband and son's passion for sailing. As a family we escape to the beach on weekends and have spent the last few summers there for weeks on end. The palette of materials is low maintenance and relaxed.

My favourite rose gold cuff and Vincent Van Duysen book
Two of my personal design favourites that represent my tendency toward classic, lasting and crafted design. The rose gold screw cuff takes its cues from classic boat building inspired by a shackle. I have always been inspired by the work of Belgian designer and architect Vincent Van Duysen. He is renowned for his innate sensitivity and sophistication. Sophisticated yet relaxed, minimal yet warm and most of all impeccably detailed.

Patricia Urquiola interview for Share Design
Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Patricia Urquiola, one of the greatest designers of our time, for my design resource website Share Design. Having worked on projects that cover all aspects of design, from interior to architecture and even product design, there is very little that Patricia hasn't done! Patricia spent some time in Australia to celebrate 20 years of Space Furniture and we spoke about all things design.

Daniel Emma's BIG exhibition at Lamington Drive featured on Share Design
As an industrial designer myself it was exciting to see Australian design sweethearts Daniel & Emma's very first solo exhibition 'BIG!' recently held at Lamington Drive in Collingwood. While they typically work on a small scale it is very exciting to see the two-man team take on bigger things!

All set up for a Shareen Joel Design bathroom photoshoot
Just prior to Christmas we shot for Inside Out one of my favourite SJD-designed bathrooms. Classic in style, the travertine lined bathroom will feature in a 'before and after' for the magazine.

Anastasia KLOSE | One stop knock-off shop at Melbourne Now
My hometown Melbourne is focused on all things art and design at the moment as the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has opened its latest exhibition, Melbourne Now. Unlike any other exhibition ever held at the NGV, Melbourne Now is an exhibition motivated by the incredibly rich and diverse art and design culture that profiles Melbourne as one of the world's most creative cities. Anastasia Klose has created an installation, 'One stop knock-off shop', in a quest to challenge and indulge the commercialisation of contemporary culture, through performance and installation. Brilliant and 'Must See'!

Walnut stacking bowls prototype as a new Shareen Joel Design product
As an industrial designer and interior architect I have always been passionate about all aspects of design and I am forever challenging myself with self-initiated product design projects. I have been working with walnut timber in recent projects and its beauty in contrast to brass. We are currently prototyping a set of stacked walnut bowls with a finely machined brass lid. Watch this space!

Belstaff leather biker jacket & Ilse Crawford's Sensual Home book
Sometimes your old favourites are still the best and for me it's all about quality and detail! My trusty black Belstaff leather biker jacket nails it with its highly crafted hardware and quilting details. Team it with 'Sensual Home', the book, and I am settled! Whilst working for Ford Motor Company in London and Detroit in the '90's I discovered the talents of editor and designer Ilse Crawford. In 1995 she released her first book entitled 'Sensual Home' and to this day I still refer to it for inspiration and ease of style.

Claystone Pottery kiln
Crafted by hand, this shot was taken the day we visited Christopher Plumridge of Claystone Pottery to see our lidded boxes fresh out of the firing oven in preparation for our Share Design Exclusives.
