18 is the age at which Lara Miller was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease. Now in her mid-30s, and with severe limitations to her sight, she is travelling the world with her husband, celebrating what she sees through the lens of her camera.
Megan Morton, who first met Lara at an Insta-meet in Brisbane, has curated an exhibition of 18 images, opening at The School this weekend. "We have worked hard on curating a real cross-section of her heartfelt images," says Megan. "Lara has travelled to 18 countries and a lot of the trips are really, in most cases, the first and last time she will see them this way. Such a special collection. We have had them all expertly printed and framed in Queensland and can't wait to share with the world the way Lara sees things."
Here Lara shares her unique perspective on several of her photographs - for more, follow her on Instagram @lovewalkeatsee.

These roads that beg to be photographed, the ponies that stand peacefully in the fields, the wind that whips the grasses, the striking mountains that surround, snow that sprinkles magic, and fog that brings soothing tones… there is endless beauty and freedom that calls to me here. Brecon Beacons, Wales

Some of my favourite moments of travel, are the simplest. The times where we feel that we have integrated somewhat or at least glimpsed into local life. But my enthusiasm gives me away. As I watched the donkeys at work, school kids boarded their bus next to me. I could not understand how they were so nonchalant – “Look! Cute donkeys! Asini, molto carino! Working in traditional ways! Oh now, it’s going up those narrow stairways! Why aren’t you giggling with excitement like me?!” I thought to myself. Amalfi Coast, Italy

Clementines transport me back to a hike with my beloved. After being escorted part of the way by a friendly farm dog, watching tanned, older men pick their olives and getting glimpses into daily life, we reached our desired destination. As we sat admiring the view, I felt a wave of gratitude for my body, my husband, our walks and the sweet fruit that I popped into my mouth. Rome, Italy.

We braced ourselves against some ferocious winds for a visit to this adorable cove. As the sea battered against rocks on the other side of this headland, I pondered what it would be like in this cabin that very night when the big storm was due to hit. By then, we were curled up in our accommodation next to a dairy farm, protected by the surrounding valley of greenest greens. Yet one can’t help but still ponder being in that endearing cabin… can we? Devon, England

Forever seeking out the laneways, we discovered this charming bike casually leaning against the wall, as though they were sharing a secret. Stories of where they have been or who has entered their walls, perhaps? An old building and a bike basket, what tales have they? Dublin, Ireland

In this photo I am reminded of ability that comes via my disability. My husband and I stood side by side taking photos. Later that day he asked me where I took this image as he did not have any idea. I was reminded that my vision of the world is unique, and while I do not see many things around me, I also capture scenes that people miss. I celebrate these things I see. Amalfi Coast, Italy.
18 by Lara Miller opens at The School in Rosebery from 4pm on 14th November and runs until 18 December.
