How to decorate a kids bedrooms that will grow with them

Decorating a kids bedroom can be a tough gig, especially when their tastes change as quickly as days of the week. If they're going to be sleeping in one room for eighteen years of their life, it's going to go through some iterations, but there are elements you can incorporate that will age with them and work for whoever they are at the time.

Furnish for the future

While it may be tempting to give in to that fairy princess bed or bright orange bookcase, there's no use spending big on furniture pieces that won't last. If they're transitioning from a cot to a big kid bed, consider something a bit more mature and in a neutral colouring. Dual-purpose furniture is also great for the room to grow with your kid. For instance, consider a loft bed with a desk or open space on the bottom level that can take them from childhood play to high school study. Also, a dressing table can be both a great storage option and can be used as a desk later in life.

Add character through decor

For the more permanent fixtures such as wall colours and pricier furniture pieces, stick to a neutral colour palette. Incorporate colour and personality in the decor that can be switched up at a moment's notice. Bed linen, wall art and decals are the perfect places for bright colour and prints, and fairy lights, flags and ceiling stars are a fun addition that can easily be removed.

Create an abundance of storage

No matter how you decide to decorate, kids are always going to need places to pack away those toys, store their backpacks and books, and organise the clothes they're always growing out of. Baskets on the bottom shelf of a bookcase are a great option for toy storage and are easy for small hands to pull out or put away. Storage beds keep shoes and seasonal items out of sight and mind. Wall hooks on the backs of doors keep backpacks off the floor, and storage boxes tucked away on top of cupboards can store items that they may have grown out of but can't bear to throw away just yet.
