Get the look of The Golden Girls

They're the iconic grand dames who gave us unforgettable lines like, "You better stick to her like a tight shirt on a sweaty farmhand" and taught us that it's always the right time for cheesecake. Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose each had colourful personalities and razor-sharp wit, and their sense of style was certainly no different.

Their Miami Beach living room was vibrant, cosy and a chic mix of 70s boho, mid-century and Hollywood luxe. While it may look dated today, there are ways you can bring some Golden Girls, Florida fun into your own living room without it feeling daggy and, if you pare it back and opt for more refined details, it can even be done elegantly. Here, stylist Drew, a big Golden Girls fan, shows how it's done with bamboo-look furniture legs and pastels as accent colours. 


"We are seeing a resurgence in rattan and cane furniture. The difference with this trend this time round is its more considered approach, with rattan armchairs and entertainment units in white or bleached finishes giving a lighter look that's totally boho chic."

Rattan and cane was featured in excess throughout the home of The Golden Girls in 1985 and we've seen these materials come back in spades in the last few years. While The Golden Girls may have had a complete lounge suite made out of rattan and cane, rattan and cane these days is being used more in detailing and is a far less dominant feature.


"Today's Golden Girls' living room would start with a more neutral base, finished with linens in white and greys - the Cumulus slipcover sofa would be the perfect canvas. From there, simply add palm leaf motifs and luxe velvet cushions in soft pastels to blend a clean coastal look with pops of kitsch colour and personality."

To tie in a hint of Hollywood regency, as the fabulous Golden Girls no doubt would, opt for a scattering of velvet and brass with an opulent ottoman or a mirrored bar cart. These add an eclectic vintage feel and highlight the mix of trends that were so loved when first seen on The Golden Girls nearly 35 years ago. Much like the reruns, these trends are still going strong.
