What are your backgrounds, and how did you come to start your business together?
My background is textile design and floristry. Neil is a furniture maker. We have collaborated on projects for many years, and starting our own business was something we'd been thinking of for a long time, but when we made the decision to do it, everything happened really quickly.

What was the impetus for the design of your storage cubes & shadow boxes?

Are you super organised or do you prefer organised chaos?
At home - both! At work though, super organised most of the time :)

We talked to Bonnie Ashley, one half of Melbourne-based design duo bonnie and neil (the other half is her partner Neil Downey) about their business, and the idea behind their very popular hand-made storage cubes and shadow boxes.

We know your products are made sustainably - how important is this to you?
For us, it is vital that our products will be made sustainably. It is not a difficult commitment, although it is not always the cheapest or quickest option - it's more expensive in terms of raw product and process. We feel our customers appreciate the extra time and cost sometimes involved in making our products this way.

What was the impetus for the design of your storage cubes & shadow boxes?
We live in a small cottage, and it becomes crowded easily. If you stack things neatly in cubes: books, ornaments, etc, it opens up the space. Also our shadow boxes were born from always wanting to move things off the floor and make rooms more spacious. We use our shadow boxes to display plants and ornaments in our home. We use the storage cubes as bedside tables, side tables + seats.
