Adore - A book of colourful interiors

We're fans of online magazine Adore Home and its hard-working creator Loni Parker, so we were intrigued when we saw her request for contributions so that she could publish her own book. We chipped in of course, and have just received two copies of the result - an appealing collection of bright, poppy spaces from around the world paired with practical styling tips for every room. We caught up with Loni to find out more about how the book came together, and she has shared a sneak peek at a few of its colourful pages. Order your copy at the Adore Home website.

Congratulations on the new book!  Tell us more about your decision to 'crowdfund' its publication.
Thank you! I knew I wanted 100% creative control over the book and as I am from a publishing background I knew I could easily self-publish the book without having to go through a traditional publisher. Plus it can take years for a publishing company to get back to you – I'm somebody who likes to get things done quickly once I get an idea in my head, so that just wasn't an option for me. What I didn't have was the funds to get it printed so I decided to crowdfund through Pozible and see if Adore fans would pledge their support by pre-ordering a copy of the book. To my delight I had about 500 pre-orders through Pozible which was enough for me to print 3000 copies of the book.

What is the common theme for the interiors you've chosen to feature?
The interiors in general are quite colourful, they're also really happy interiors. They just make me so joyous when I look at them. I guess that was the formula: colour + happiness = Adore book.

Yellow is known to stimulate the appetite, making it a delicious choice for kitchen accents.

You clearly have an affinity for colour and graphic pattern.  What do you think is the key to a successful mix?
Yes I definitely do – this probably stems from my graphic design background. I've always been drawn to bold interiors – vanilla and beige aren't really my thing. The key to mixing colour and graphic pattern successfully is to go with one star item in the room and then build around that. It could be a bold graphic wallpaper teamed with a plain sofa and then some scatter cushions that pop in a contrasting colour. Contrast is so important. If it's a sea of one colour it can tend to look a little stale, but add a pop of colour in a different hue and bam you've got something that's eye catching and a little bit daring.

You focus on practical advice and tips for each room. Was this a conscious decision?
Yes definitely. The book is divided up into chapters according to room type and it gives helpful advice from home owners and designers/stylists that helps to make sense of why that particular room works. I wanted the book to break things down easily in a reader-friendly way. I guess I wanted to show that you don't have to be an interior designer to get the look of these homes. Many of the homes featured in the book weren't designed by interior designers – just interior enthusiasts that have a passion for creating a beautiful home.

Detailed wallpaper with lots of character makes a big statement.

What do you hope your readers will take away from the book?
I hope readers will feel really inspired after reading the book. I've already had people tell me that they want to redecorate and add more colour into their own homes after reading the book. That's pretty much the ultimate goal – is to have readers inspired by the book to decorate their own homes using ideas and style tips that they've learnt through reading Adore.

The Sydney bedroom of Alice Stephenson features a palette of plum, organce, pink and gold.

What's next for Adore? In the immediate future I've got the Sydney and Melbourne book launch parties for Adore and then after that it's back to work as usual with creating the next issue of Adore Home magazine. Creating a book is a lot of work and I'm not sure that I'll be doing another one any time soon. I have been considering doing a printed annual copy of the magazine but we'll have to wait and see. There will also be more Adore shopping tours on the horizon – just have to plan dates and cities.

Update: This promotion is now over. Congratulations to winners Genevieve J and Monique D!
