Inspired by this week's Boho at Bedtime photo shoot, T&W style guru Jessica Bellef counts down her top 5 creative ways to use rugs in the bedroom.

1. Layer rugs under the bed
If the rug you love is the perfect colour or pattern for your bedroom but isn’t big enough to sufficiently cover the floor space, pair up two rugs and layer them. Match a patterned rug with a plain block colour to avoid busy pattern clash. And play around with placement – the rugs above are layered in a staggered way, creating a point of interest.

2. Create an oversized headboard
For a grand headboard effect, play with scale and draw the eye up with a statement rug that is hung from almost ceiling height. The rug has been folded over a curtain rod installed above this bed, allowing the rug to sit off the wall and making even more of an impact in the space.

3. Hang a rug as art
A multi-coloured, richly textured rug on the wall is the perfect complement to an otherwise neutral bedroom, acting as an eye-catching artwork. Dark walls and natural linens on the bed allow this Moroccan boucherouite rug to sing out, with the penny round cushion in dusty blush tying the colour palette together.

4. Use a rug as a bedspread
Instead of creating a focal point with a statement headboard, direct the eye to the foot of the bed by layering a lightweight cotton flatweave rug in a geometric pattern. The best rugs to use are ones that have a little give in them, so they drape over the edge of the bed. For a boho feel, go with a kilim in rich tones.

5. Add warmth with sheepskins
One of the best things you can do for your feet in the bedroom is to lay a sheepskin rug in front of your bedside table. The softness underfoot as you climb in and out of bed can’t be beaten. In this light, bright bedroom, the white sheepskin adds texture and softens the walnut timber floors.
