Choosing the right ceiling fan

A ceiling fan needs to match the room size: 90 to 110cm for bedrooms, 120 to 130cm for living rooms, 140cm plus for open-plan spaces. Bigger blades move more air at lower speeds, which means quieter running.

DC motors are quieter and more energy-efficient than older AC versions. Browse our range of fans online including ceiling fans with lights for combined fixtures, or pair with a separate flush mount ceiling light for stronger illumination.

Where ceiling fans fit best in a room

Hang the fan with at least 30cm between the blades and the ceiling, and 210cm between the blades and the floor. For sloped ceilings, an extension rod and a tilting bracket keep the fan level.

Combine with wall sconces or a floor lamp for layered light when the integrated bulb isn't enough.

Enjoy year-round comfort from one ceiling fan installation

Most modern fans have a reverse function that pushes warm air down in winter, making them useful year-round, not just in summer. Remote and app controls let you adjust speed and direction from the couch.

Outdoors, use only IP44-rated fans or stick to outdoor wall lights and patio fans designed for damp areas. For ambient living-room layering, multi light pendants pair well over a dining table set away from the fan.

Frequently asked questions

What size ceiling fan do I need?

Most bedrooms suit 90 to 110cm; living areas usually require 120 to 130cm; large open-plan rooms 140cm or more. Two smaller fans often work better than one big fan in long rooms.

Are DC ceiling fans worth it?

DC fans use around 70% less energy than AC equivalents and are noticeably quieter at all speeds. They cost more upfront but pay back over a few years of use.

Can I install a ceiling fan myself?

In Australia, hardwired ceiling fans must be installed by a licensed electrician. Replacing an existing fan with the same wiring still requires one.

How low should a ceiling fan hang?

Keep at least 210cm clearance from the floor to the blade tips for safety. For low ceilings, choose a low-profile or flush-mount fan.

Do ceiling fans help in winter?

Yes. Running the fan in reverse at low speed pushes warm air at ceiling level down into the room, which can cut heating costs.
