Coastal Beds & Frames

What makes a coastal bed frame different from other styles

Coastal bed frames draw on natural materials: rattan, linen-wrapped timber and whitewashed or light-stained wood. These keep a bedroom feeling airy in a way a dark upholstered frame can’t replicate. The palette leans into whites, warm naturals and soft blues, and the bed frame itself becomes the anchor the rest of the room’s materials work around.

Solid timber coastal frames handle humid environments well, provided there’s reasonable airflow, while synthetic rattan offers the look of natural vine without the mould risk. Look for kiln-dried hardwood, which stays far more dimensionally stable in high humidity than lower-density timbers.

Sizing a coastal bed frame to your room

A queen frame at 153cm wide suits rooms about 3.5m x 3.5m and larger, once you account for bedside tables and walking space. A king, at 183cm wide, needs at least 4m x 4m to keep 90cm of clear walking space on each side. Getting this measurement right matters more with a coastal frame than a plain one, as the whole appeal is an airy, uncluttered feel, and a bed crammed too tightly into a small room undoes that immediately.

A platform-style frame with a solid or slatted base suits a mattress between 25 and 35cm thick for the best proportion. Anything over 40cm on a low-profile base can look top-heavy and make getting in and out less comfortable. Most standalone bedheads can either slip behind the bed to be held up by the bed’s weight, or attach via bolts into pre-drilled holes at the head end. Check width and bolt spacing before buying one separately to avoid a mismatch later.

Once the frame’s sorted, stock up on bed sheets in a coastal-friendly linen shade, such as soft yellow, white, and blues to finish the look.

Layering bedding and accessories without it looking like a rental

A coastal frame reads best when the bedding mirrors its relaxed palette. When choosing bedding, linen in stone, white or sage suits a coastal frame better than a heavy jacquard or dark velvet cover would. The easiest way to avoid the piece looking like a styled holiday rental is restraint. Stick to a maximum of two decorative cushions in an accent colour and one textured throw rather than several stacked layers.

Let the bedside tables and bedhead carry the material story, instead of repeating it in every layer of bedding. In summer, swapping a doona for a lightweight cotton waffle throw with a couple of linen cushions keeps the coastal mood without overheating.

Frequently asked questions

What are standard Australian bed sizes for coastal bed frames?

Australian standard bed sizes are: Single (92 x 188cm), King Single (107 x 203cm), Double (138 x 188cm), Queen (153 x 203cm), and King (183 x 203cm). Always check mattress dimensions to be sure it’ll fit your bed frame before purchasing.

Are coastal bed frames suitable for humid coastal climates?

Solid timber coastal bed frames perform well in humid coastal environments provided there is reasonable airflow in the bedroom. Natural rattan, however, is moisture-sensitive and requires good ventilation to avoid mould. When comparing frames, choose kiln-dried hardwood, which is far more dimensionally stable in high humidity than air-dried softwoods.

What mattress thickness works best with a coastal platform bed?

A platform-style coastal bed frame with a solid or slatted base suits mattresses between 25 and 35cm thick for the best visual proportion. A mattress thicker than 40cm on a low-profile platform base can look top-heavy and make getting in and out of bed less comfortable.

Can I add a bedhead to a coastal bed frame I already own?

Many standalone bedheads can be slipped behind a bed frame without tools, or attached to a standard bed base via bolts that slot into pre-drilled holes at the head end of the frame. Most AU-standard bedheads are sized to suit queen (153cm) and king (183cm) frames, but always check the width and bolt-spacing specifications before purchasing.

How do I style a coastal bed without it looking like a holiday rental?

The key is mixing in personal items and avoiding overly matched sets. Use a maximum of two decorative cushions in your accent colour, opt for one textured throw rather than multiple layers, and let the bedside tables and bedhead carry the coastal material story rather than trying to replicate it in every layer of bedding.
