Ways with inlay

Source: decorpad.com via Emma on Pinterest

Our Exotic Traveller feature showcases bone inlaid mirrors, chests and bedside tables from India. We trawled Pinterest for some inspirational images of interiors featuring these beautifully patterned, hand made pieces.

The buffalo bone, sourced as a by-product of the food production industry (and certified by the Indian government prior to export) is carved by hand into delicate shapes and the pattern laid out onto a wooden base. A resin layer is then applied and sanded back to expose the striking pattern.

This traditional technique is concentrated in the Udaipur region of India, where skills are often handed down over generations. Care for your bone inlay furniture with just a damp cloth rather than modern cleaning products, and consider applying a sealant if it is to be exposed to spills or moisture.

The last image is from Anna Spiro's Absolutely Beautiful Things blog, and demonstrates that inlaid pieces can work in a layered interior, as well as making a statement on their own.
