Temple & Webster on the Voice to Parliament referendum

Yirringarni Green Waterhole by Russellina Puruntatameri

On 14 October 2023, every Australian will have the opportunity to vote “yes” or “no” in a referendum on whether to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

It is an important moment in our lifetimes, an opportunity for all of us to be heard. The referendum follows years of consultation with First Nations communities, culminating in the Uluru Statement from the Heart, an invitation from the representatives of those communities to all Australians to walk with them on the path to reconciliation and a better future.
Temple & Webster's vision is to make the world more beautiful. We are dedicated to the home and the spaces where we live and work.
First Nations people have called this place home for over 65,000 years. With this in mind, it is with deep respect that every day in our workplace we acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country throughout Australia.
We’re also proud to have formally commenced our journey of reconciliation, recently submitting our inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) with Reconciliation Australia.
Our business strives every day to be a leader in promoting diversity and equality for all Australians. We are an active member of Pride in Diversity; a current member of the Diversity Council Australia and we were proud advocates for marriage equality. We’re so proud of our warm, inclusive team who bring their best and most authentic selves to work each day and empower their teammates to do the same.
To be ambitious and to push to make our world a better place for everyone is literally in the DNA of our company. Temple & Webster’s values are to be creative; to be supportive, to be inclusive; to be ambitious, to be empowered and to get sh*t done. And we know, since starting our business in 2011, that often it requires challenging the status quo and going the extra mile to achieve better outcomes.
However, companies don’t vote in referendums, people do. We acknowledge this is a very personal and sometimes emotive topic. So, we’re not here to tell you how to vote. That is a personal decision that we have all been asked to make. We encourage everyone to take the time to reflect on this opportunity and to seek the information you need to make the most informed decision you can. Excellent resources are available from the Australian Government, or from the Australian Human Rights Commission

Personally, we’re supportive of the proposal. If the Voice referendum results in a “yes,” we’d be hopeful that it’s an important step in the journey of positive change. If not, our commitment to our values and to make the world more beautiful through our work on reconciliation, diversity, equity and inclusion will continue.
