Stylists' challenge: the Easter picnic

We asked the Temple & Webster styling team to create their ultimate picnic basket for an Easter long weekend, where the set-up is just as important as the snacks.

This Easter I’m… sipping champagne in the (hopefully) crisp sunshiny weather, followed by an afternoon nap. And celebrating the recent elopement of close friends over lawn bowls in the beautiful NSW coastal town of Wombarra.

In my basket: Classic salmon and dill brioche is easy to hold in one hand while your other hand is busy with dominoes or champagne-filled glasses. I applied gold leaf to boiled eggs to bring some sparkle to the spread, and bundles of herbs and edible flowers not only look pretty but can be added to your picnic dishes.

Picnic style tip: Bend the rules and bring your indoor pieces outside. Lay a cotton dhurrie or flatweave on the ground and throw down some cushions for lounging, but don't forget to shake off any creepy crawlies before you bring it all back inside.

This Easter I’m… travelling to LA for a friend’s wedding! Usually, though, it’s all about family, friends, excessive amounts of chocolate and a late-afternoon picnic by the beach.

In my basket: I’ve kept things natural to tie in with the coastal surroundings – organic timber serving trays and handmade ceramic plates, mixed with with some vintage cutlery and sturdy short glassware that won’t blow over in the wind. Antipasto, quail eggs and grapes are all easy to share, and I've packed some kombucha to counteract all that Easter chocolate.

Picnic style tip: Simple, handmade linen and twine bunting to hang off a tree is a quick and easy way to define your picnic space and add a breezy touch. And always pack a pair of scissors to collect beautiful floral finds while you’re out and about.

This Easter I’m… Escaping the city with some friends. A hike in the Blue Mountains and onwards to my family’s farm in Oberon. The area’s moody, filtered-sun pine forests are the perfect place for mushroom picking, a cook-up and a picnic.

In my basket: I’ve got my tartan picnic rug and brought along some sourdough and Woodside Saltbush Goat’s Cheese. The plan is to forage for some mushrooms to make bruschetta (but you can BYO mushrooms, and even cook them ahead if you like). I’ve got my enamel mugs, a thermos full of coffee and a hip flask of whisky to spike the coffee if the mood strikes. Every hipster travels with lo-fi tech, so I have a radio and Polaroid camera, too. Oh, and a yabbie net.

Picnic style tip: Picking a theme or mood for your picnic helps tie all the elements together. I’ve used timber plates and cut logs as surfaces to keep in theme with the surroundings.
