Sally Campbell Textiles: Wonders from India

The cushions and throws in today's Saffron Blue feature are a fabulous combination of modern design and traditional skills from India, and follow on from our recent sell out Kantha Colour sale. The Bengal region of northern India and Bangladesh is the home of kantha, a running stitch traditionally used to quilt together layers of vintage sari fabric. In a world of mass-produced uniformity, this traditional craft produces unique and colourful textiles which look a lot like art.

Sally Campbell agrees, and is staging an exhibition in a Paddington (Sydney) art gallery of her hand made textiles. Sally spends time travelling to remote communities in India to work with artisans to create traditionally made textiles with a contemporary edge. Hand made with care, each piece has its own imperfections and tells its own story. Having spent 25 years as a film designer, Sally has an amazing eye for colour and an affinity for the beautiful blues created from natural indigo. For an inspiring look at how to layer vintage and one off textiles in your home, admire Sally's home, as recently featured on The Design Files.
