As the owner of Garden Life in a new location Sydney’s St Peters, Richard Unsworth has designed and advised on countless gardens, including his own kitchen garden (pictured) at the front of his inner city home. We asked for one tip for Spring and he generously provided two. Consider yourself lucky!
The one thing for spring in my vegie garden is to improve the soil - feeding and mulching around the plants will ensure their health and abundance as the temperature rises. I use Major's Mulch lucerne, manure and straw organic compost and the plants love it. I’ll sow rocket and other salad greens so I can pick endlessly just what i need for each meal. I'll feed and mulch all the plants, not just the edibles - the lawn will need fertilising and I’ll feed all the pots with a slow release fertiliser that will last all through the growing season.
My second thing for spring would be to check if anything needs a quick haircut, if i missed anything in my winter prune I’ll give a quick trim to ensure its looking its best when that delicious first flush of growth comes.
