Melbourne through the eyes of illustrator Beth-Emily

We were introduced to talented Tasmanian illustrator Beth-Emily by Jacqui Fink, who included her delicate illustrations in our last Hand Made Market event. If you missed that, you can also see her work on her website and buy prints through her Etsy store. She's now based in Melbourne, and we knew her eye for detail and creative outlook would make for a beautiful Week in Pictures...

My daily commute takes me along one of Melbourne's many beautiful bike paths. This ride allows me to unwind from a days work at my studio.

A birds-eye view of my desk, where I'm currently creating works for a small solo exhibition. This collection of works will be on display at one of my favourite retailers and stockists in Adelaide, Council of Objects (opening Saturday the 7th of June).

Visual diaries are an outlet for me to document and process my ideas. I really enjoy this process as it helps me focus on an idea and removes it from the noise and distraction of other thoughts.

I always try to find time within the week to catch up with other like-minded creatives. We often discuss future collaborations, ongoing projects and also general business practice. It can be isolating working for yourself and you often find yourself caught up in your own bubble. It's nice to have others to bounce ideas off and discuss solutions. It keeps me grounded.

My down time is usually spent hanging out with friends or with this little turkey, Ninny, who likes to lurk on the stairs.

Work is a mixture of client, commission and personal projects.  I like maintaining a balance between these. I enjoy the process of working on client/commission projects as they often find me producing work I wouldn't normally do, like being engaged to paint this interior mural by Hecker Guthrie. I apply what I learn from these challenging projects to my own personal works and they become all the more stronger for it.

I'm constantly working on new illustrations to expand my open and limited edition print range. This is the newest edition of my Ornithologica series 'Red-Necked Avocet.'

My new found love for pottery often leads me to Northcote Pottery Supplies in Melbourne. These stunning works are only a few on display.

Depending on whether we can get away, weekends are usually reserved for adventures and exploring.
