We asked Jared Cadry to tell us more about the Maymana kilim rugs.
What is a Maymana kilim?
A kilim is a flat carpet woven using a loom, with the design created by interweaving different colours into the warp and weft. Maymana is a region in northern Afghanistan; these wool kilims are woven by the Uzbek tribespeople who were once nomads of the land, using centuries old techniques.
What can you tell us about the colours in this collection?
Maymana kilims have traditionally been woven with darker, earthy tones. About a year ago we provided dyed wools in bolder, more vibrant colours to the weavers of Maymana and we are more than pleased with the results. It is a collection that Cadrys is going to continue to develop.
What is unique about kilims from this region is that the weavers scale their own pattern, style and features for each rug – they do not follow a graph or drawing. This means each rug is unique, unlike a large selection of kilims and flat weaves available today.
Any tips on caring for kilims?
Vacuum regularly, and give your carpet an occasional airing. We find kilims work better in low-traffic areas and we definitely recommend using a carpet pad under the rug to stop it moving around.
