It's a wrap

'Twas the night before Christmas and ... you ran out of wrapping paper. Take a leaf from our Pinterest board full of simple ideas with last minute appeal.

Newspaper or book pages double as gift wrap at a pinch, with the addition of as little or as much as you have in the way of ribbon, twine or greenery. Extra points for vintage or foreign language pages.

A simple sprig from the garden elevates plain white or brown paper and twine. Hint - if desperate, cut up your paper shopping bags which are usually satisfyingly substantial.

Old rolls or samples of wallpaper make great gift wrap. Incorporate interesting vintage finds or novelties for an intriguing package.

Use stylist Megan Morton's advice and use scarves, tea towels, napkins or fabric offcuts for colour and texture.

The final word? Raid the kids' craft drawer, or get them involved, for cute wrap with character.
