How to make your living room feel more spacious
It's true what they say: size doesn't matter, it's what you do with it that does. Discover tips and tricks to make the most of your space.
1. You may already know about mirrors and its ability to create the illusion of space, but don't forget to consider where you place them to maximise its potential. Hang them strategically to fake the length of your living room and to create the impression of infinity. Also, place your mirror to reflect things that you love such as plants, pendant lights or artwork. Large round mirrors are fantastic to break up rectangular furniture and to reflect lots of light and space.

2. Hang a statement chandelier or pendant light to add drama, and to draw the eye upward and make your living room feel taller than it actually is.

3. If your living room also functions as a dining area or workspace, create zones with bookcases, console tables and rugs to divide the room into sections, and make sure you use the largest rugs that each zone will allow for.

4. This may seem like an obvious one, but choose furniture that actually fits into the space. That means measuring your living room carefully and buying what's appropriate. Go for less bulky pieces in lighter colours with exposed legs and consider sofas with thinner arms and backs.

5. Generally speaking, less is more when trying to make a room feel more spacious. Opt for one large piece of artwork in a simple white or natural wood frame rather than lots of smaller pieces.

6. Be sparing with how much goes on your floor and try to keep things clutter-free, but that doesn't mean you have to limit your decor. Create carefully curated vignettes or little 'scenes' on coffee tables, consoles and shelves. An example of a vignette might be a stack of coffee table books, a candle and an ornament. Play with layers of different textures, aiming for enough contrast between shiny and matt, light and dark, curved and angular, and so on.
