We share two edited extracts: the first is Ellen and Petra's 24 hour bucket list, and the second is an interview with Sebastian Scherer — one of the many interviews featured throughout the book. Our perfect 24 hours in Berlin, with selected destinations from this book, would look like this:
We’d dedicate the morning to the delicious breakfast served at Auntbenny. We’d follow this with a long walk in the Tiergarten park to keep our dog Juri happy and to look at the freshwater turtles in the Tiergarten ponds and creeks.
After so much fresh air, it’d be time to fortify ourselves with a Vietnamese Pho soup and freshly made iced tea from Monsieur Vuong.
We’d then be ready for a bit of shopping in Mitte: I might treat myself to one of the lovely writing utensils from Luiban, while Petra would explore The Store X. Juri would drag us straight to Feinspitz, sit down at the treats bar and look at us with his most irresistibly pleading eyes.
Our shopping spree would probably take us past one or two of several old photo booths that were rescued from the scrap heap by local enthusiasts, and we doubt that we’d be able to resist having a few instant photos taken.
In the evening we'd indulge in fabulous dumplings at the Long March Canteen and then watch the zoo animals from a comfy bed in The Stue Hotel.
Sebastian Scherer
Sebastian left his home town of Aachen ten years ago and found a job in Berlin immediately after graduating in interior design. However, that first job has remained the only permanent position in his career so far. He has worked as a freelance interior designer for various agencies and started designing his own award-winning line of furniture in 2010. Sebastian originally planned to sell his designs for production, but decided to make them under his own label after it proved difficult to find a manufacturer. His furniture has recently also been stocked by interior design shops in the USA. Best known is his Diamond lamp, which can be admired in the Visby store in Friedrichshain, among others.
What would you say is typical of Berlin?
Berlin is too beautiful to be ugly, but too ugly to be beautiful. That somehow sums up Berlin for me. This city is a strange mixture — it's a sort of love-hate relationship.
What inspires you about Berlin?
In Berlin, there is continual tension between creation and change, mainly because of the many people who move to Berlin. I think it’s great that I have the opportunity to be part of this change. Berlin is an international metropolis, but still has a small-town feel in the city’s various districts.
Your favourite part of Berlin?
I really like the place where I work, in a shared office on Schönhauser Allee. For me, the building is among Berlin’s most beautiful, and it has a great courtyard. It’s an old building, but has still escaped refurbishment.
The best breakfast?
I like The Barn Roastery. When the sun shines, I sit outside and take my time to enjoy my coffee.
Your insider shopping tip?
I love cooking, and my favourite place to shop for ingredients is the Frischeparadies Lindenberg. This market has a huge selection of foods, including a lot of more unusual ingredients. The different varieties of garlic alone are overwhelming.
Favourite watering hole?
At the moment I often go to Bar Saint Jean, a basement bar with a beautiful, dark interior.
What would a perfect 24 hours in Berlin look like?
I love the city, but if we have time we like getting out to the nearby countryside, just to relax. Berlin is surrounded by great nature and lovely lakes. In summer we go swimming, and in winter we go for long walks and a bite to eat afterwards. Brandenburg has a few excellent restaurants; my current favourite is Gasthof Tenzo in Triepkendorf.
