You moved from many years in fashion to your own creative project in homewares. How do you see the link between the two industries?

From a consumer perspective I think people are experimenting with their spaces as you see in fashion. For me, the creative process is similar so it's not a huge leap, just enough to keep it interesting.

What is most important to you about your products?
There is a focus on using sustainable and eco-friendly practices and suppliers where possible. I use eco-friendly inks and inserts as well as organic cotton canvas in the collection, and linen, which is known for its longevity.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying the creative process from start to finish. From developing concepts, producing hand made, unique products, to the final interaction with customers though my online store and social media.

Your designs are produced locally. Is this a priority for you?
It is for many reasons – maintaining quality and a face-to-face relationship with my makers is important. They're a small team and seeing them grow as well is nice. I also like the idea generally of sourcing from the local community and supporting local craftspeople.

Your collection is small and tightly edited. Is this a deliberate strategy, or should we expect to see more from you in the future?
It is deliberate – there is nothing 'mass produced' about Agnes Homestore! I design and illustrate the artwork, print the products and a bunch of other things that pull the final products together. Next year holds lots of new prints and different products – watch this space.

Quickfire questions:

Trend you love: Colour – an obvious choice!
Trend you hate: Throwaway items, I like things that last.
Design icon: Harry Seidler, Kelly Wearstler, Phoebe Philo. I could keep going… very hard to pick one.
Local secret: Feel like you're back in Japan at Sake Bar & Restaurant.
Dream Christmas: By the sea (a family tradition) with champagne, seafood, cheese, pavlova, belly laughs and lots of littlies underfoot. Can't wait!
