We first discovered ceramicist Hayden Youlley thanks to Jacqui Fink, who chose him to be part of our Handmade Markets series last year. His Paper series of tableware, made from porcelain with delicate, paper-like crinkles was born out of a university project about re-use of materials, after he became interested in the contrasting ideas of treasure and trash, and creating something solid and long-lasting to look like something more ephemeral.  He spent many months prototyping each piece, and his porcelain pieces in pure white and with hand-painted rims have become a favourite of stylists. We're thrilled to offer the range today - and please do note that the pieces are microwave, dishwasher and food safe!



6am: I’m up at sunrise . Wetsuit on, board in the car and I head to the beach to catch some waves. Usually it’s Maroubra or Bronte beach; sometimes I head up north to Curl Curl or Dee Why.



9am: From there, it’s straight to my studio in Marrickville. My day starts with prepping and pouring moulds to make the pieces needed for the week. It took me 6 – 8 months of prototyping to create my Paper series, but the process of making them is now much more streamlined.



1pm: After the Paper pieces come out of the mould I paint colour onto the rims and put them into the kiln for the first time. Then it’s lunch. I make it myself – usually some combination of broccoli, carrot, beetroot, avocado and brown rice.



3pm: The work comes out of the kiln for glazing, then goes back into the kiln at a higher temperature. The little symbol on each piece is actually an aeroplane I drew when I was really young, and desperate to be a pilot. My Mum had kept it, and when I was thinking about a logo it was an obvious choice - my graphic design skills seem to have peaked at age 4! I spend the afternoon packing orders using lots and lots of bubblewrap. A stylist might pop by to pick up some samples for a magazine shoot.

5pm: Home is not too far from the studio. I have to admit I end the day with my feet up in front of the telly...
