5 steps to creating the ultimate pet living room

Remember *that* viral TikTok video? The one where a dog Dad turned his spare room into a pint-sized living room for his three miniature dachshunds; sofas, side tables, TV and all? Since going global, the famous pet pad has now evolved to include a fireplace and live fish tank, too!

How to set up a dog living room

Inspired by the genius decorating idea, we thought it would be fun to see what a dog living room looked like in the world of T&W. The result is pretty darn stylish and easily translates into a luxury pet corner if you don't have a whole room to spare.

1. Draw on trending materials

Your dog's living room should echo your style, so draw on the materials you love when choosing a pet bed your four-legged friend can lounge on. Whether you prefer a boho rattan pet bed or a sleek leather pet bed, structured frames with back and armrests look the most like sofas, making them your best bet for achieving a classic living room configuration.

2. Take it up a notch with decor

Once you’ve landed on the main pieces of furniture, add decor elements such as a rug, coffee table and wall art to add a homely feel to your set-up. To inject decorative flair, invest in a small synthetic rug that fits your mini floor plan (synthetic materials can withstand more wear and tear and are easier to clean when dirty paws abound). A small side table can double as your pet’s coffee table, while wall art that reflects the room's occupants is the perfect finishing touch. Who doesn’t love a pooch portrait?

3. Don’t forget a basket of toys

No matter the kind of dog living room you’re creating—big or small, simple or OTT—you need a dedicated area to house toys, blankets, leads and collars. A chic woven basket is a great way to keep toys in one place while still leaving them accessible for your four-legged friend. Best of all: woven baskets suit many different decor styles, so you won't even need to hide yours away.

4. Have some fun with it

We already mentioned that side tables double as dog-sized coffee tables, and there are so many more clever decor subs you can make to suit your pet. @worldsbestdogdad created a mini bar cart from a shower caddy, turned cake stands into side tables, and used a wooden jewellery box as a storage trunk. Have some fun with it and see what you can dream up.

5. Finish with practical touches

If your pet living room is more of an addendum to your human lounge room, then chances are, your pup will want to get on the couch to snuggle with you. Pet stairs can help your pooch get up high and prevent any strain on their joints from jumping. An elevated feeder is another must; it will aid digestion by providing easier access to food and water and facilitating movement from mouth to stomach.
