T&W Editorial Director Karen McCartney is something of a collector herself, so we asked her to compile a list of ceramic artists to follow. Here are her picks, both local and international, for adding the art and craft of ceramics to your feed...
Tortus Copenhagen, whose name is derived from the tortoise, indicating the humble approach and pace, hand makes ceramics in the heart of Copenhagen. Eric Landon is a master potter and designer who uses traditional methods to create simple forms rich in form, colour and texture.
Japanese born, and Central Coast based, ceramic artist Keiko Matsui works in fine porcelain to create a mix of functional and decorative objects. Her work is always thoughtful and sensitive. She recently exhibited her work at Small Spaces in Sydney’s Redfern.
“I am constantly exploring and attempting to harmonise the opposing aesthetics of primitive, rough and raw with the subtle, composed and contemporary”, says Alana Wilson. And she does it beautifully.
There are two strands to the work of Australian ceramicist Kris Coad. One is the pleasure taken in the creation of simple everyday objects that are sensual and transculent and beautiful to handle. The other is her art pieces that use elements such as leaves (shown) to create ethereal pieces that are about stillness and silence.
Belfast-raised and trained ceramicist Derek Wilson produces work which has been shown globally. He creates a diverse range of objects combining the skills of a studio potter with that of a conceptual artist. His works are happiest in groups where they can convey a sense of sociability and community.
