The bushfires of January 2020 are represented within this artwork, depicting the destructive and damaging way in which the fires swept across the country and devastated the lands. It represents the idea that had traditional methods of fire use been implemented, the surrounding hills could have been saved.
Fire as a tool is extremely powerful, but it must be respected, harnessed, and understood, otherwise it becomes the enemy. In this instance, fire was the enemy, a strength turned against the community. While the elders teach the young how to respect and understand fire, they could not teach the authorities, and the fire ultimately became the power used against them. It's a poignant piece about our beautiful lands.
