A wall sconce adds ambient lighting without taking up floor or table space, making them ideal for hallways, bedside walls, stairways and bathrooms. Wall mount sconce lighting also lifts the eye line and makes ceilings feel higher.

Getting wall sconce placement right

Mount sconce lights 150 to 165cm from the floor in hallways. Either side of a bed, around 75cm above the mattress works for reading. Either side of a mirror, 165cm centred on the bulb gives flattering face lighting for most.

For a fully lit room, pair sconces with flush mount ceiling lights and a floor lamp in the corner.

Picking a wall sconce that fits your space

Match metal finishes to the hardware already in the room: brass with warmer interiors, matte black for contemporary rooms, brushed nickel for coastal styles. For outdoor use, switch to outdoor wall lights rated for weather exposure. Look for the ‘IP’ rating - a completely exposed area should have lighting rated IP65 or higher.

If your room runs warm, balance the lighting with a ceiling fan that can pull double duty in summer and winter.

Most wall sconces are designed for bulbs equivalent to 40 to 60 watts. LED globes around 6 to 9 watts give the same brightness with much lower running costs.

Can I use a wall sconce in the bathroom?

Only if it's rated for damp or wet areas. Look for an IP44 rating or higher and keep it away from direct shower spray.

How many sconces do I need in a hallway?

Space them every 2 to 2.5 metres along the wall. One either side of a feature like a mirror or piece of art creates a beautifully balanced frame.
