Meet the artist Tess Napaljarri Ross Headshot
Tess Napaljarri Ross, born 1949 near Yuendumu, moved to the Aboriginal settlement of Yuendumu as a child. Her stepfather, Larry Jungarrayi Spencer, an artist known for the Yuendumu Doors, taught her patterns and designs from Yarri Pirlangu. Tess trained as a teacher assistant and became actively involved in the Two-Way teaching program, preserving Warlpiri culture and language. She has worked as a translator and contributed to the Yuendumu Doors Book. Tess is married with a daughter and is engaged in various community programs. As one of the early painters of Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, she incorporates Yarri Pirlangu patterns into her Jukurrpa stories, blending tradition and contemporary art.
